Store Manager

About the Role

Maintains a robust Museum Store with an interesting and informative selection of objects and books that continue the story of our collections. They are responsible for scheduling staff coverage and volunteers (collaborating with the Front Desk and Events Supervisors), all financial transactions, reports, and marketing initiatives pertaining to the store that are ultimately approved by the administrative manager. Additionally, they assist in front desk coverage and will develop an online store.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the health of the retail store

  • Improve retail sales and generate revenue for the museum

  • Maintain careful records and reporting

  • Train staff and volunteers on use of the registers, stocking merchandise, and maintaining good record keeping practices

  • Covers front desk as needed

  • Generate marketing initiatives to promote store items

  • Can communicate effectively about their needs to succeed in their role

  • Can identify and manage store needs in advance based on upcoming events and exhibitions

  •  Closely reviews the schedules of incoming groups making sure the store has ample coverage

  • Greet members in a friendly, premium, and professional manner

  • Encourage memberships to visitors who are not currently enrolled

  • Has an eye for detail and maintains a clean, organized workspace, and store

  • Communicates with new, current, and former store artists

  • Other duties as required

  • Is willing to learn and understand museum culture and collections

  • Can follow fundamental standard operating procedures

  • Has an eye for detail and thinking outside of the box

  • Has a fundamental understanding of retail marketing

  • Can track and manage retail sales and use data to make predictions about future merchandise success

  • Can accurately reconcile cash/credit card transactions

  • Has knowledge of working with Square

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises event volunteers according to the organization’s policies and procedures. Responsibilities include scheduling, training, and directing work for volunteers and staff, information management, and reporting accurate sales (income/expense-gross/net).

 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Retail and merchandise experience

  • Supervisory experience is preferred

  • Experience working with the public

  • Knowledge of buying wholesale and consignment

  • Knowledge in building relationships with artists

  • Basic cash-handling understanding
